Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

Following the week in which China lost a maths championship to the US for the first time in 20 years, ISIS released a Terrorists' Holiday Brochure and Lord Sugar (finally) asked Paris Hilton "What do you actually DO?", EP brings you a brief round-up of some other interesting news items which you may have missed

  1. Including the 65 million year old skeleton of a Psittacosaurus, Police discovered a total of 213 dinosaur fossils in a raid on a builder's home in China after they received information that he had stolen them from a nearby construction site
  2. Gotcha! Or, maybe not...Acting on a tip that a wanted fugitive was hiding in a house in Phoenix, Bounty Hunters pulled up to the address in the middle of the night and began banging on the door and shouting for those inside to come out! Cameras rolled as Police Chief Joseph Yahner answered the door of his home wearing boxers and carrying a bat... cue some choice language and evidence of how well a 30 year law enforcement veteran in the 6th largest city in America can "handle himself"
  3. "Accidentally glued myself to a crocodile while attaching a radio transmitter!", "1988: Went to Jamaica to collect insects. Hurricane Gilbert also went to Jamaica. Our traps probably went to Mexico" and "Skilfully applied $1,000 satellite tag to manta ray. The same manta ray I tagged yesterday" are just some of the hilarious situations & conundrums scientists have found themselves in, posting their scenarios on social media under #FieldworkFail
  4. CCTV footage from London shows how one man unwittingly performed a death-defying act by walking away from a bus stop mere moments before an out of control driver crashed into it, obliterating the very spot where he'd been standing
  5. A woman in Texas has been awarded $229,500 after receiving 153 nuisance calls from Time Warner Cable. Examining evidence proving that she had repeatedly asked for them to be stopped, a Judge declared she had been unfairly harassed and ordered a sum of $1,500 for every call received
  6. In Ottawa, 22 year old Andrej Szczypka has been arrested after he was observed climbing the National War Memorial monument and then "fornicating the statue"! Righteously indignant, the Minister of Veterans Affairs called the incident "deplorable and disheartening" but praised the "good citizens" who called the police
  7. Given that it's home to an annual crime-writing festival (an event which started after Agatha Christie was "found" in a hotel in the town having been missing for weeks in 1926) it is perhaps ironic that Harrogate was named best place to live in the UK ahead of Shrewsbury, Ipswich and York
  8. Good Deed Feed: Officials in the town of Fredericton, Canada have installed kindness parking meters whereby all parking fees are divided between local charities rather than added to the council coffers. It is less than a week since they were installed and over $1,500 has already been donated
  9. In America the FDA has approved production of the first 3D printed drug. The technology makes it easier for patients to swallow the pill as it takes just a small sip of water for the tablet to dissolve entirely in the mouth
  10. If you think you're having a bad week, spare a thought for the man in Florida who was inadvertently captured on a live TV news feed cycling through a flooded street. As the camera followed his progress, the unfortunate man was watched by thousands as he crashed, flew through the handlebars and face-planted into the side walk!
