Sir Garry has been one of the most influential leaders in hospitality over the last forty years. He played a crucial role in the building of a very successful business which sat within the great Forte Empire. This is a story of a man who grew up in post-war Yorkshire and soon became a man ahead of his time.

It is as important of a story today as it would have been twenty years ago, for it explores the concept of leadership and how leaders do possess a desire to learn throughout their lives.
Sir Garry built businesses during some of the fiercest economic periods and there are lessons to be learnt herein for current leaders and emerging talent. This story is supported by interviews with many great figures including Sir Rocco Forte and Bob Cotton OBE.

Very interesting book and so easy to read. Some humorous moments as well. I had worked for Sir Garry and so knew his style of management - an inspirer, personable, thoughtful and a great visionary. Even if you didn't experience it, there are great lessons for all CEO's in this book about valuing staff at all levels, treating them as important, communication and living the values of the Company yourself. It is such a pity that the Gardner Merchant name died. And the frustrations of working with some educationalists, who have no concept of what industry needed, gives food for thought.
