When Frankfurt was evacuated, hotels were there to support
The German city defused a massive World War II bomb after evacuating 60,000.On Sunday German explosives experts defused a massive World War bomb in the financial capital of Frankfurt after tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes. The compulsory evacuation of 60,000 people was Germany’s biggest maneuver since the war, with more than a thousand emergency service workers helping to clear the area around the bomb, which was discovered on a building site. The hospitality industry once again showed its true colours and offered discounts for those affected in the all-day effort. For those not able to leave town, they spent time on the edges of the evacuation zone and this is where the hotels provided the much needed support.Hotels and the industry as a whole can play such a central role in society - whether driving, motivating or bringing a group together. It can play the lead in social good and social change.Hotels were also of great support during the Grenfell Tower tragedy in June and offered free accommodation for those who lost their homes. Many of London’s Hospitality leaders came together to raise over £100k in support of the victims from Grenfell Tower in a charity dinner at The London Novotel West. The evening was organised by the West London Hotel Managers Association in partnership with the Kensington Chamber of Commerce, FR Events, BITA and other like-minded organisations. These are first-rate examples of how hotels and the hospitality industry can be one of the core pillars on society and be the centre of a community. As the world continues to change at pace we need places where we can come together and interact, for the better of society. We have a special industry, let's never forget that.
