The pea milk brand born out of lockdown

Where is the nutrition? Where are the tasty and sustainable options? These are questions that The Good Pea Co. founders asked back in the first lockdown of 2020. Nikki & Su, like many others during the pandemic, adopted a more plant-based lifestyle and quickly realised that whilst there were many different plant milks, there was not one that ticked all the boxes in terms of nutrition, taste and sustainability all at the same time.

So they decided to create their own! The Good Pea Co. is a plant-based milk brand that specialises in creating pea milks using yellow split peas as their hero ingredient.
The idea for The Good Pea Co. was further inspired by the families of Nikki and Su; having experienced food intolerances and having the need to provide 4 young children with nutrient-rich plant-based options. Oat and almond milks remain hugely popular, but what many consumers might not realise is that they can lack nutrients, in particular protein, can be high in hidden sugars and not always planet-friendly – it takes 1.1 gallons of water to grow a single almond!

With this in mind, Nikki & Su began whipping up recipes in Nikki’s kitchen, and both having come from Indian heritage, it seemed natural to use the protein-rich Yellow Split Pea. Their thoughts were solidified when they found that field peas are nitrogen-fixing, meaning that little-to-no nitrogen fertilisers are required in the fields, keeping our lakes and oceans cleaner.

The founders spent 18 months perfecting their recipes with the help of a Food Technologist and sourced high-quality ingredients before launching their first product – 2 flavours of Pea milks; the Original and the Barista. The pea milks were an instant hit with health-conscious consumers, and The Good Pea Co. quickly gained a loyal following via their online subscription and through the Food Service industry, where they are extremely popular with chefs.

However, the road to success was not without its challenges. The founders had to navigate the complex world of food manufacturing, which involved sourcing ingredients, developing recipes, and finding the right production facilities.

One of the biggest challenges the founders faced was educating consumers about the benefits of peas on the body and the environment, but the scepticism around the taste profile. They soon found that their milks do the talking! With a whopping 34g of protein per litre and 50% more calcium than cow’s milk, partnered with the delicious creaminess and sustainability story, the Original is a winner. Not to mention, the Barista froths like a dream and many have said it has a similar taste profile to cow’s milk.

Today, The Good Pea Co. is a successful and thriving business, with a strong brand and loyal customer base. The founders have remained committed to their mission of creating healthy and sustainable milk alternatives, and you can now find The Good Pea Co. at Selfridges, King’s College, London, Eat17 retailers, luxury hotels and wellness centres.

How Peas will change the Planet – chef’s special

‘How Peas will save the Planet’ started a Ted Talk speaker during a Sustainability talk. Little did the founders of The Good Pea Co. know that this statement would play a pivotal role in choosing the hero ingredient in their Plant milk brand. The Good Pea Co. is the new Pea milk brand on the block, proud to be offering consumers a nutritional, tasty and sustainable range of Pea milks, made with the goodness of Yellow Split Peas and Coconut Cream.

Founders Nikki Garg and Suhani Bhudia are hap-pea to call Kings College London, a Partner of the brand. Executive Chef, Graeme Collie had this to say about the brand, “From 1st May, King’s College will be replacing all dairy milk with The Good Pea Co. it works exactly the same as ‘normal’ milk, it’s better for the environment, better for you and no cows are harmed in the making of the dishes!”
The lives of chefs are made much easier, when using The Good Pea milks, especially when preparing ‘free from’ dishes, as the milks are free from the UK’s top allergens. In addition, they have a simple and effective range; the Original, which contains 34g of protein per 1L carton, 50% more calcium than cow’s milk and fortified with vitamins B12, D and Iodine. Perfect for cereals, smoothies, shakes, recipes or just on it own. Then there is the Barista,, which froths like a dream.

Founded by two mothers of Indian heritage, the London duo have ambitious plans, with Nikki Garg stating “I expect to see The Good Pea Co. to continue to grow at an exciting pace and be the number 1 choice of Plant milk across the UK.”
“One of The Good Pea Co. values is to be as inclusive as possible. We are proud to be free from the top allergens. We are free from dairy, nuts, soy, lactose, gluten and 100% oil free. We are vegan and our hero ingredient, the Yellow Split Pea has a great sustainability story.
Knowing that on average 2 children in every UK classroom have allergies, and as mothers ourselves, we feel passionate that families have access to alternatives that match or exceed nutritional content of dairy and so created the only soy-free milk alternative to match protein content and exceed calcium content of dairy. We live by our tagline; Good for the planet and its People.”

It is important for us to live and breathe our values and so we, as the co-founders are plant-based ourselves, and have made sustainable choices throughout our journey, from minimising supply chain, to choosing fully recyclable packaging to manufacturing in the UK and using ingredients that keeps our lakes and oceans cleaner.” This has attracted many Food Service clients, who are focussing on reducing their carbon footprint over the coming years. Along with a number of universities becoming partners of The Good Pea Co., they are seeing a peaked interest from the hospitality industry, with hotels such as Limewood Hotel and Donnington valley Hotel, offering the alternative milk to their guests. Replace London, a wellness and recovery centre, was one of The Good Pea Co.’s first clients and does a lip-smacking matcha latte and berry smoothie with the milks.

The Good Pea Co. are passionate and collaborative, keen to help more and more people make healthier and more sustainable choices everyday.
