Hospitality could play a central role in the rebuilding of city centres. What is new?

Many talk of the new working pattern but the one thing which is for certain: London will rebuild very successfully. The chances are that it will just be different.

As the new political narrative of “Levelling Up” is launched, many will say that London has suffered more than most during the pandemic. One can argue that a levelling up has already happened, but London is forecast to bounce and return to strength by 2025. It may take 3 years of rebuilding but it will still be a global powerhouse able to compete with any city in the world.

The main differences will be led by the consumer. For the first time, perhaps ever, cities do not dominate the narrative. People have discovered that cities need them more than vice versa; people can work from all over the country and still be successful. This is a fundamental change as the definition of city business may also change. The last two years have proven that the City can still operate away from the Central Business District. Numbers will return but what will bring people back will be experiences and services. For Hospitality, it could mark a whole new opportunity; one where it can play a central role in what makes a city tick.

The consumer today possess the technology to be able to communicate and operate from wherever they so desire. They have access to great events, arts & culture, sport, restaurants, hotels and the best shops. Wherever people are, so will new businesses, start-ups, innovation, technology and more be. Cities can rebuild very effectively by placing the consumer first and building around them. They do hold the power for the first time.

This year, EP is proud to launch a new series of forums which will look at how the industry will rebuild post-pandemic.

· What are the new economics?

· How will digital innovation change service?

· What is important for the consumer?

· How will business change?

· What services will engage?
