Consumer spending falls to 2.8 per cent in Mayas shoppers 'feel the squeeze' of inflation Barclaycard’s consumer spend data for May has landed, show that entertainment spending remained resilient, up 12 per cent, driven by double-digit growth in restaurants (11.7 per cent). The latest monthly figures show consumer spending growth fell to 2.8 per cent – a 10-month low – as 52 per cent of shoppers say they are ‘feeling the squeeze’ of inflation.- Shoppers rowed back on spending across the board, foregoing household goods (-2.9 per cent) and clothing (-2.9 per cent) in particular
- Yet Brits continued to spend on the ‘experience economy’, with double-digit growth in cinemas (11.5 per cent) and restaurants (11.7 per cent) boosting entertainment spend growth up 12 per cent, indicating that leisure time is still a top priority.
- Sentiment overall has cooled, just over half (53 per cent) of consumers feel confident in their household finances, down from a high of 70 per cent in March.
