An evening of fine sporting wineLast night former England international rugby player Simon Halliday introduced some delicious sporting wines in the wonderful surrounds of One Moorgate Place.His Sporting Wine Club, created with partner Chris Mariner, introduces various wines which have a sporting connection. During the evening Simon and Chris provided fascinating stories over glasses of Schalk Burger's South African wines.The Sporting Wine Club was created to provide wines from sporting legends such as Schalk Burger. It can act as a conversation piece and with an interesting story does engage the guest.The company supports the charity Help for Heroes of which Simon is a patron. During the evening Simon explained how they support the charity by helping to organise and supply the wines for some of their events and how they raise money at others.Among the various bottles served during the evening were the Meerkat Sauvignon Blanc - crisp and lively with aromas of green melon and lemongrass and the Welbedacht Cricket Pitch - a carefully blended blackcurrent, dark chocolate and liquorice from grapes crown next to a cricket pitch.It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening of delicious wines with powerful stories to match. The Sporting Wine Club has created a fascinating concept and it will be interesting to see which other sporting greats, with links to wine, are available in the future.
