The psychology of business is changing. It will become less alpha; more focused on people, productivity and external clients.

Over the last two decades, there has been much written about how alpha business environments had become. It was even written, almost comically but with a streak of truth, of how the role of CEO attracted those with deep psychological flaws. It is well documented that workplaces have been less than people friendly and too often many environments have been more concerned with internal issues than clients. It was even estimated that the average senior executive could only devote 9% of their day to clients.

It was not a healthy environment and was long in need of change. The Covid pandemic was a release which accidently empowered the employee from the need to feel dominated by and in the workplace. The pandemic has changed the psychology of work. Companies are now realising and recognising that they cannot just order people to return to offices. They need to raise the bar and create stronger environments which encourage people to return for all the right reasons.

Many can see how other environments have grown and evolved from across all disciplines. It is going to be a painful journey for many as all learn how things do need to change.

It is interesting that sport has not just set a tone but shown a new way to improve performance. The top athletes today are far less alpha in approach, calmer in mindset, calmer under pressure, and work hard at their skills. The old rivalries are far less intense, there is more respect and the skills are higher than ever.

The same will be seen in business. Alpha behaviours will decline, environments will improve and offices will return with stronger environments, cultures, behaviours and better business performance than ever.

Some argue that the environment is becoming more feminine but this is not about gender. It is more about a calmer agenda which has a stronger understanding on how to engage new generations with a new narrative. The old days are eroding away and a new landscape is emerging.

Change has already begun.
