The London Food Forum – to develop new culinary thinking together

London has prided itself on being one of the gastronomic capitals but the challenge now is evolve, to develop new ideas and to build new recipes for the future. It is only by sharing knowledge and ideas can we really ensure that we all improve together.

The London Food Forum is a concept developed by John Harris, former founder of The Good Eating Company, to build a knowledge share forum to look at food with a fresh lens.

The forum is designed to be a meeting of minds to openly discuss different subjects, all with one central theme, food. Explaining some of the mysteries. Looking at modern issues affecting the way we eat now.

How have our food culture evolved? The origin stories of the classic combinations? The smell, taste, and why we still like to eat these classic dishes?

Looking forward to what the new trends may turn out to be.

There is no lack of themes to be explored and learnt? This is the aim of the London Food Forum, to share ideas, knowledge and to learn together. Consider:

  • If one places to be one side the history which lies behind ingredients, it is clear that many, once rare are now considered every day. How we lost their magic? How can it be rediscovered?
  • We have excelled in importing food styles and recipes from different countries, but is there a danger that we have compromised their origins? Are we losing more than recipes? With our ageing world population, we lose more and more connection with our past as each generation goes by. The Nona’s of Italy are trying to leave their legacy via social media, as the children and grandchildren show little interest in learning the traditional Italian way to prepare food.

What started the British love affair with Indian Curry? There is an entire genre, that has little to do with the original Indian food it was based on.

Do we really have a strong knowledge of our own heritage and legacies?

The next generation

This is arguably an exciting time for food as many will be forced differently to think about recipes in new ways to combat inflation and shortages. We will need to develop new ideas and learn from old ones.

The UK has long enjoyed being a global centre for food. London has prided itself on being one of the gastronomic capitals but the challenge now is evolve, to develop new ideas and to build new recipes for the future. It is only by sharing knowledge and ideas can we really ensure that we all improve together.
