The Hospitality Debating Society

The Hospitality Debating SocietyThere is interest and excitement from both individuals and companies to take part in the Hospitality Debating Society and turn opinion into structured arguments and have fun. There is an argument that the recent election showed that politicians have forgotten how to debate. This absence was highlighted by slogan-mongering or dismissive, personal remarks. It is good to have an opinion and argue the point, but it needs to be structured and people must consider the fear of consequences. Is it fair to say some people have become afraid because they cannot back their opinion with detailed knowledge or have the ability to reflect upon the criticism or remark? The grand old craft of a debate is educational and can support learning. Engaging with opposing views and speaking strategically is an essential need and this activity does allow one to interact with a wider community.Debating has survived the tests of time and whilst conducted in modern environments, the core remains the same. There are many areas to be debated. For example just some of the topics could be:

  • Are some companies hiding behind the power of the brand? Are brands as powerful as they used to be?
  • Do the generational differences - especially Millennial and Baby Boomer - need to be explored? Have we forgotten generation X?
  • The changing role of F&B - central production kitchens and experiences that go beyond food are hot subjects right now.
  • What role can hospitality play in creating social good/social change?
Debating is not just arguing a point, it is also about considering a possible course of action in one's mind before reaching a decision. It can be used to share knowledge and appreciate an opposing side's opinion. The craft should never be forgotten but perhaps the skill has not always been passed down through generations.Let's change this and ensure all have the right to debate.
