Travel trends: 2017Last week the ONS launched Travel trends: 2017, the annual estimates of travel and tourism visits to the UK and associated earnings and expenditure between the UK and the rest of the world.
- There was a record number of visits to the UK in 2017 and a record number of visits abroad by UK residents.
- Overseas residents spent £24.5 billion on visits to the UK in 2017, an increase of 9% compared with 2016.
Mike Saul, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Barclays on the report:“Visitors from overseas can’t seem to get enough of Destination UK and its world-class attractions with almost 40 million foreign tourists making the trip to these shores during last year, the highest recorded figure. Boosted by the weakness of sterling, the UK’s position as a leading draw continues to bring benefit to our hospitality & leisure businesses, as well as to the retail sector. In uncertain economic and political times, it’s reassuring to see an almost 5% increase year on year in the number of overseas travellers coming here as well as spending more than £24bn on visits in 2017 which bodes well for the sector.”
