Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

EP brings you a brief round-up of some of the news items which were perhaps as surprising as they were enlightening

  • It's 25 years since "WWW" became part & parcel of modern day living. In 1989 a paper called Information Management: A proposal was released, detailing how the "information superhighway" would operate. Since then there have been many who benefited from on-line business, most specifically the 25 Web Superstars
  • Since the legalisation of cannabis in Colorado, veterinarians in Denver have seen a significant increase in the number of dogs being treated for marijuana poisoning
  • Did someone forget to pay the electric bill? A night time NASA photo from the International Space Station shows, in stark contrast, how North Korea is shrouded in nigh on complete darkness very unlike its neighbours China and South Korea
  • Last summer sunlight bouncing off the concave windows on the £200 million "Walkie Talkie" building in London were blamed for melting the paint on a Jaguar along with countless cases of sunburn and over-heating. Now, in an effort to prevent the same happening again, developers have come up with a design for possibly the world's largest blackout curtain consisting of builder's netting stretched across one side of the building
  • A fairly comprehensive review of strange happenings in The North includes Witches in Newcastle and monsters in Northumbria
  • In possibly the strangest news report ever broadcast, a reporter found himself telling the story of how a man covered in jello was caught having "relations" with a cow while his friend recorded it! The incident left 1 cow dead, 2 men arrested and 3 cars wrecked
  • A state of matter which exists simultaneously as a crystal and a liquid called disordered hyperuniformity has been discovered for the first time, in the eye of a chicken!
  • A 14 year old boy has become a Twitter sensation after his (backwards) poem "Our Generation" was posted on-line
  • Earth's galaxy is looking somewhat more crowded than previously thought as NASA has "discovered" 715 new planets
  • And finally, if you feel you're having a bad day, spare a thought for Robert Williams in Maryland. Having successfully robbed $20,000 from a bank, he was shortly thereafter arrested after amused bank customers found themselves with ample time to call police as they watched him drop his loot and proceed to attempt to pick it up using an upturned umbrella before running outside and slipping on an icy patch, cutting his head open. His choice of getaway car, a bright green minivan also proved particularly conspicuous in the daytime traffic
