Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

EP brings you a brief round-up of some of the news items which were perhaps as surprising as they were enlightening

  1. It's a modern day gold rush! It's believed that the tiny village of Tyndrum, near Loch Lomond may be sitting on a £200 million fortune as plans are being established to create Scotland's first commercial goldmine
  • The power of social media! On more than 50 occasions this month alone, the FBI has left American airspace in mayhem as flights were delayed, cancelled, evacuated or diverted following "credible threats" made via Twitter
  • Would you like fries with your Government? The home of former Taiwan leader, Chiang Ching-kuo, may soon become a McDonald's Café as the fast food giant has applied for a permit to convert the building
  • Hospitality Humour - After receiving a missive from the management team advising they were happy to help with "anything, anytime" a guest jokingly responding that she'd like a framed photo of Nicholas Cage delivered to her room. It's more than likely she didn't expect this to result in a protracted game of one-up-man-ship with the Concierge!
  • Measuring only 8.5ft in width and with a 2nd "bedroom" squeezed onto a platform above the fridge, estate agents are expecting to sell a 322sq-ft house in Twickenham for as much as £300,000
  • An international team of astronomers has "discovered" a new Solar System which appears to be about 11.2 billion years old, putting our 4.5 billion year old system to shame!
  • When inspectors found decaying leftovers in the microwave, sinks blocked with food, filth-covered floors & work-spaces and over-spilling bins in the kitchen of "Oriental Cuisine" restaurant in Brantham, they issued the owner with a lifetime ban from serving food - hardly surprising given he already had 7 charges outstanding!
  • "I'm not authorised to evacuate, but these temperatures seem pretty high!" When a computer glitch resulted in a weather report depicting temperatures over 2,000'C, the presenter was left trying to "roll with it" on live TV
  • Tip your waitresses! Things could have been worse for Pretima Champaneri-Phillips this week after the 52-year-old financial adviser was inadvertently billed £268,399 for an early-bird supper! Though she "didn't notice" the mistake herself, and entered her PIN on the card-reader, the eagle-eye waitress spotted the error and swiftly cancelled the charge!
  • If you think you're having a bad week then spare a thought for Mexican goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo's whose particularly embarrassing own goal in a game against Tigres UANL has been forever committed to film
