Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

EP brings you a brief round-up of some of the news items which were perhaps as surprising as they were enlightening

  1. An American man has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder after he accidentally pocket-dialled a former employee while discussing plans to have him killed
  2. Referred to as "a master class in patronising" Samsung ran a competition purporting to celebrate "some of the most amazing women out there" - offering the winner the incredible prize of (wait for it) a new kitchen!
  3. Hundreds turned out to march in protest this week in Mexico City demanding equal rights - for Zombies!
  4. Move over MacGyver! A web developer in America has built a fully functioning gun with such seemingly innocuous items as a hair dryer, rubber bands, a tube of “Mentos” and some magazines - all purchased after passing through airport security
  5. Billed as a “model of co-existence between polar bears and humans”, the town of Churchill, Canada is having to adapt to the side-effects of climate change. As bears are forced further inland in search of food, the resulting increase in attacks on humans have residents looking for a solution on how to continue to co-exist peacefully. The answer? Polar bear jail
  6. With a story involving Chinook helicopters and clones of Bruce Forsyth, Wasdale native Mike Naylor has won "The World's Biggest Liar Competition" for the 3rd time since 2005
  7. Including references to “dog food offerings”, noting employees as “yuppie dinosaurs” and a request to “Hold on a sec, pilgrim”, a leaked internal memo from Yahoo is possibly one of the strangest emails ever sent by a senior management team
  8. The Richards family in Canberra, Australia have set the Guinness World Record for the most Christmas lights in a residential property by covering their home with 502,165 twinkling bulbs
  9. When in Rome! A list of the strangest food you might be offered while travelling abroad includes fried tarantula in Cambodia, boiled African land snail and roasted guinea pig in Ecuador
  10. Once deemed "the comet of the Century", Comet ISON has been vaporised by the sun leaving behind only a trail of dust
