Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

EP brings you a brief round-up of some of the news items which were perhaps as surprising as they were enlightening

  • Did you know that the IOC Athletes' Social Media hub at The Sochi Winter Games, encompassing Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, recorded 2 billion impressions from over 6,000 athletes! With over 22,500 posts in a mere fortnight, Team USA was the most active group throughout - to give a sense of proportion, Team GB amassed 9,867 posts while Uzbekistan limped home with 975
  • There are already more than 80 recognised sleep disorders ranging ranging from 'restless leg syndrome' to 'narcolepsy' and now there's two thoroughly modern additions to the list: "sleep texting" and "sleep on-line shopping"
  • After tests and laboratory experiments, the Indiana State Health Department has given "Skittles" a clean bill of health after two people were admitted to hospital complaining of burning throats, having shared a packet of the sweets
  • A reason to export to Europe? A new survey of the cost of delivering parcels around the UK shows Royal Mail business rates are as much as twice the price of sending the same parcel to the Continent through a specialist provider
  • The Hubble Space Telescope continues to impress as NASA has released the first ever photos captured of a disintegrating asteroid
  • From China to Kent and Alaska to Siberia, Google Maps has published images of the strangest "faces" found in nature
  • A recent report from Gallup on the general well-being of Americans shows that while West Virginia held the dubious honour of most obese State from 2010 to 2012, the baton has now been passed to Mississippi and its population of 35.4% obese residents
  • Last week's storms off the West Coast of Ireland have unearthed a hitherto unknown drowned forest in the sea near Galway
  • The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2014 Worldwide Cost of Living survey places Singapore at the top of the list of most expensive Cities to live while London doesn't place at all
  • And finally, if you feel you're having a bad day, spare a thought for Gemma Worrall, the 20 year old British beautician who has been forced to confess "I'm just amazed at how quickly things can get out of hand from one comment. I will definitely think before I tweet in future". The Lancashire native felt compelled to make the admission after coming in for international ridicule for a previous Tweet reading: "Why is our president Barraco Barner getting involved with Russia, scary"
