Ten things which raised an eyebrow this week

EP brings you a brief round-up of some of the news items which were perhaps as surprising as they were enlightening

  • Amid growing concerns of a repeat of last month's knife attack, a Buddhist Temple in Eastern China has put together a Squad of Anti-Terrorist Monks to protect the 1,700 year old Temple, equipping them with shields, pepper spray and batons
  • Meanwhile, in Utah, a scorned woman named Cameo Crispi has lived up to her moniker by attempting to burn down her ex-partner’s house, using bacon fat!
  • Strangely, Ukranian authorities have rejected an application from Darth Vader to run for President
  • In a thoroughly modern solution to an old problem, a young couple unable to afford the hefty fines associated with China’s notorious one child policy, have decided to put their unborn child up for adoption, on an on-line forum
  • From the toddler who eats carpets to a young mother who dines on dirty nappies and the builder who considers rocks to be fine-cuisine, the list of world's weirdest eaters might turn you off your lunch
  • Despite perceptions of commuters being squeezed into train carriages akin to that of sardines squashed in a tin, Hong Kong has been named best city to travel around by rail while still falling well behind in terms of air quality and number of cycle paths
  • When 24-year company veteran Jairo Reyes was dismissed for getting in a dispute over the hours senior staff could work, UPS sacked 250 employees who had gone on a 90 minute strike in protest/show of solidarity
  • Keep the change! After a frustrated woman in Pennsylvania paid her $200 sewer bill in nickles and dimes, officials have placed a $10 limit on how many coins people can use to settle their accounts
  • Were you the unwitting victim of an April Fool's gag this week? You're not alone! Some of the best pranks from around the UK included advertising for the Wino-Tap which purports to convert the kitchen sink into a wine faucet, the announcement that "Warburtons" were to build a London HQ office surrounding the Gherkin to be called "The Sandwich" and the Visit Scotland video reel claiming farmers have found a way to milk whiskey from cows!
  • And finally, if you feel you're having a bad day, spare a thought for high school teacher Alan Stephenson in Leicestershire who was struck by lightning while standing in the school sports field, holding an umbrella
