It was an old adage for many years that “youth is wasted on the young”. In my day – and my generation was privileged to be invested in – we enjoyed our youth – most especially our student days and early career days. Life was not too serious, not carefree – we experimented, failed, laughed and took risks with little fail of failure.
Does hospitality suffer from the golem effect?
Is this psychological phenomenon taking place in our sector?The golem effect is when low expectations are placed upon individuals which in turn leads to poorer performances.
There goes the fear
Painting a portrait of the hospitality industry at the moment is proving to be quite difficult. At one end there are the current business leaders who have a certain way of going about their work and it has been successful. At the other end is an emerging group of talent who approach business in a different way. Those in the middle and caught between these two stools and overall there is friction and confusion.
Do you feel like an imposter?
We are constantly asking and being asked where the leaders of tomorrow are? Why are the same chairs being filled by the same people? Why are there so few women in senior leadership positions? What is this “glass ceiling” and why is it still seemingly so hard to break though? It is fair to say that there have historically been barriers, especially towards women but in this new world why are we asking the same questions? Is it the lack of opportunity or business culture causing this or could a contributing factor be something much more psychologically sinister?
